Helping learner drivers make the best use of the learner
period is a challenging task for parents and supervising
drivers. It is even more difficult now that many Australian and
overseas licensing requirements include a minimum experience
requirement for learners. Two electronic books are
available here to help parents deal with this challenge:
From the Kerb to Traffic - a guide book for parents designed
to help give some structure to the learner period to help
learners develop skills as they gain experience.
Supervising a Learner Driver Doesn't Have to Kill You -
stress management techniques for the parents of learner drivers
based on sound research into helping people overcome anxiety and
stress.
Both books are free for parents to download and use - but you
need to use special djVu reader software. It is free and
works with your web browser. If you try to open one of the
books and it doesn't work, download the djVu plugin for your
browser from
here.
THIS IS IMPORTANT:
You are responsible for helping your learner driver accrue
driving experience in a safe manner. The suggestions made in the
electronic books on this site offer one way of achieving that
aim, but they do not take away from your responsibility to make
sensible decisions about how you and your learner can remain
safe. The suggestions here are general in nature and cannot take
your specific situation into account.
If there is ever any hint of doubt or concern about how best
to proceed, you should not allow your learner to drive and you
should consult an experienced professional (such as a driving
instructor) for advice.
