NEW DRIVERS

There are many myths about the best way to improve the safety of new drivers. Scientific research doesn't support these myths. People talk about advanced driver training, better education, learning the road rules properly, seating position in the car.  There is no scientific evidence that any of these things improve the safety of young drivers!

Here are some papers about education programs for new drivers:

Why skills-based training will not work

Developing the skills needed to detect hazards

Some thoughts and evidence on insight-based programs

Most recently, a large review of the best scientific studies of real post-licence programs concluded that: "This systematic review of randomised controlled trials provides no evidence that driver education programmes are effective in preventing road traffic injuries or crashes."

If you still want to use an "advanced" driver training program, make sure you choose a program that doesn't make things worse.  There are some suggestions for choosing a program here.
